Art that takes you on adventure
Wavehaven Glass are original works of art created by me, Haven Livingston. For questions and comments please contact me, I’d love to hear from you! For information on commissions, see below.
My images are created from the landscapes that speak to me. Though glass is rigid and tends to break in straight lines, I treat it as if it were as fluid as paint. I invite the natural curves of a landscape into each piece.
I draw on time spent outside over two decades as a field biologist and outdoor enthusiast for inspiration. Multiple degrees in environmental sciences taught me that the real classroom has always been outside and the real teachers are the plants, animals and elements of earth.
Glass is a dynamic medium and can be used both for its translucence and opaqueness. Even the mosaics use light shining through translucent glass onto the backing board to enhance images. Textures of stain glass change with each angle of light and mirrored glass appears to flow as you pass by a wall hanging. While the pieces are two dimensional, they often take on a third dimension with varying perspective and light.
Stained glass pieces are light translucent and intended to hang in a window. They are primarily constructed using copper foil method.
Mosaics are created with stained glass, stone and the occasional found object against an opaque backing board intended to hang on a wall.
Unless requested through commission, mosaics are intended for indoor use. Stained glass may hang outside, but hanging it inside will extend its life.
All sales are final. If there is a problem with your order please contact me within 48 hours of receipt.
*Fun fact- Wavehaven has been my email address since 1998 when I got my first yahoo account so I could send home messages from internet cafe’s while backpacking in Nepal. This was long before I ever dreamed I would become an artist. And, my maternal grandmother’s maiden name was Glass! So, Wavehaven Glass has several deeper meanings for me than just a name.
Commissions
I welcome the inquiry of commissions! We begin the conversation with deciding on either stained glass or mosaic, the type of image, size and qualities desired. If you want a stained glass piece you will need to decide if you want a hanging panel that you can move to any window or panel built to be inserted as a window.
A non-refundable design fee is required to secure a commission. Gather photos (found online is fine) that represent the subject matter, color schemes or feelings that you want translated in your piece. Take a few photos of the window you want to hang your piece in and note what direction it faces. Our conversations are an important part of the process. They help convey nuances about you and what you like that result in a highly individualized work of art.
Please understand the limitations of stained glass; it is constructed more like a jig saw puzzle than a painting. Each different color within an image is separated by lead lines. Fine detail such as trees raises the cost of a piece. Incised cuts create weaknesses in the glass that may result in cracking. If images requested by the commissioner require these cuts the artist cannot be held responsible for future breakage. Photos can be used as guidance but do not not expect exact replication. Wavehaven Glass creates landscapes and images based on gestalt, emotion and fantastical color palettes.
A full cost estimate is provided with the design. Half of the cost is requested at the time the design is accepted. The balance is rendered at the time the art is delivered (plus tax and shipping). Changes requested once construction has begun may result in additional cost.
The wait time for a commission may be between 3 weeks to 6 months depending on the project so it’s best to plan ahead!
